Six (6) bottles of fine Old World wine from the private cellar of a distinguished collector.
1. Bruno Giacosa BAROLO 1993 (Piedmont)
Barolo is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which takes its name from the morning fog emblematic of the Piedmont region. Barolo wines are distinguished by their very pale colour, which evolves a garnet hue over time. The nose is complex, offering notes of ripe berries, cherry, tobacco, as well as the grape variety’s tell-tale aromas of red roses and tar. On the palate, Barolo wines are powerful, structured by very fine tannins and a lively acidity. Sometimes quite austere in their youth, Barolo wines are, by definition, wines with exceptional potential for age.
2. Bruno Giacosa BARBARESCO 1995 (Piedmont)
The medium ruby-colored 1995 Barbaresco offers aromas of tobacco, kirsch liqueur, cedar wood, fruitcake, and spicy, rose petal-like notes. Medium to full-bodied, with surprising intensity and richness for such a light-colored wine, it exhibits ripe fruit , a lush texture, and moderate tannin in the long finish.
3. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1981 (Pauillac)
Light, with more brick than red in the colour. Medium bodied, with a brightness to the red berries and cranberry fruits that are accompanied by spicebox, cedar, lead pencil, forest floor and tobacco notes.
4. Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1982 (Saint Julien)
Rich, full-bodied, concentrated and bursting with ripe fruit, this is the epitome of elegance, purity and balance. Purest and richest bouquets of classic cedary aromas and blackcurrant fruit, with toasty vanilla notes. Stunningly well-balanced, concentrated flavours linger on the palate for a full minute or more.
5. Chateau Margaux 1983 (Margaux)
The Margaux scent is all around as you stop to smell every wildflower. Violets and roses. The trees drip with dew, lending a vegetal air; the damp bracken adds a background of freshness and openness. Every now and then the nose forks off in another direction; soy sauce, lamb jus (a recurring theme) and similar meaty aromas; cedar and graphite and similar Lafite-ish tones; sherbet and chocolate, and similar candied treats. Violet-infused, cherry, plum, tobacco leaf and cigar wrapper core. Full-bodied, rich, supple, fresh and elegant, the earthy, red-toned finish is long, refined and supple.
6. Chateau Palmer 1989 (Margaux)
1989 is one of the great vintages of Château Palmer, perfectly balanced and exquisitely detailed. It is a wine that can be described as cerebral. Less exuberant than the 1983 or 1990, its nose is a little reserved and slightly floral. It has a nice acidity that prolongs the wine. Alcoholic and tannins were very high whilst acidity levels were low. The tannins were ripe and blended. The wines are fleshy, full-bodied and powerful yet supple. 1989 is definitely an exceptional vintage that needs to be kept.
