Six (6) bottles of fine New World wine from the private cellar of a distinguished collector.
1. Ridge “Geyserville” 1996 (California)
Deep, dark ruby. Forward aroma of carignane opens gradually to deep, rich berry/briar, vanilla oak. Butterscotch, green spice. Huge, sweet brambly blackberry; mixed dark fruits, cardamom/coriander spice. Intense, complex; round well-integrated tannins. Has structure for aging.
2. Ridge “Monte Bello” 1995 (California)
Open aromatics of red-fruits, with well-integrated notes of spiced oak and chocolate. Firm flavours of tannins, followed with raspberries, vanilla, coffee and nutmeg.
3. Wynns Coonawarra Estate “John Riddoch” 1987 (Australia)
Complex and elegant melange of toasted capsicum, earthy leathers, old spice, citrus, cedar box, sweet tobacco earth and age. Medium light bodied, rich swirls of cigar smoke, mint, juicy sweet dark berries, fruitcake, savory smallgoods, mushrooms, lifted with fine acidity and freshness. Supple silky lacy. A long lingering finish of sandalwood incense, blue smoke, menthol, cedar cigarbox, rich black earth and white pepper. Smooth and still very fresh, medium bodied.
4. Wynns Coonawarra Estate “Michael Hermitage” 1990 (Australia)
Medium minus intensity black fruits, a little polished oak, vanilla with time and air. Juicy, fresh; just the right side of sour; red and black berry fruit, drying oaky mid-palate grip is coarsely textured.
5. Henschke Hill of Grace Eden Valley 1999 (Australia)
Dark crimson with violet hues. Delicate aromas of exotic spices, mature ripe fruits, molasses, bacon and roast meat nuances. The palate is richly fruited, concentrated and layered with fine-grained chewy tannins, elegant structure and a long, delicious finish.
6. Penfolds Bin 707 1994 (Australia)
Tremendous depth of dark crimson. Complex and stylish bouquet shows intense, sweet, dark fruits – stewed plum and cassis with integrated barrel ferment oak characters. Earthy rich nuances and tobacco complexities add further depth to the aromas. Highly defined and powerful, the full-bodied palate has concentrated blackcurrant flavours complexed by integrated, sweet, strong oak and tannins that grip. Impeccable balance, sweetness of fruit and a long lingering finish: hallmarks of a great wine.
