Horizons represents a skyscape that goes beyond what one is able to see, know, or anticipate. Handcrafted specially for Checkpoint Celebrates! 2024, the unique contours and patterns of the vessel present a landscape that changes when viewed from different angles. As you gaze upon the work, the experience calls to mind the ephemeral beauty around us, and the importance of taking a moment to slow down and appreciate it.
“It was in a time of constant transition, a challenging period of personal growth, that I noticed the carefree nature of clouds. Calmly, they floated by, unconcerned with the troubles that brewed beneath it. Then I looked beyond the clouds towards the sky. In Singapore, the dawns blushed peach then amber then azure. In Taiwan, the dusks glowed from white to gold and then rose. It was then that I realized I always had the comfort of the same blanket of sky… I hope that this sculpture brings you a bit of sky and hope in what is approaching each time you look at it.
“It has been a privilege to have created and shared this work with you, and it is the highest compliment that you would wish to keep one of my beloved sculptural landscapes. With a heart full of gratitude, thank you for giving me the opportunity to keep making art.”
– Daisy Toh, ceramic artist
Biography:
Daisy Toh (b. 1994, Singapore) is a ceramic artist based in Taiwan, pursuing her Master of Fine Art at Tainan National University of the Arts, Graduate Institute of Applied Arts, Ceramics. She was one of the pioneer Visual Arts (Ceramics) graduates from the Singapore School of the Arts in 2012 and graduated with a BFA in Crafts and Design (Ceramics) in 2018 from the National Taiwan University of the Arts on a 2015-2018 NTUA-MOE Taiwan Scholarship for Excellent Foreign Students. She is the recipient of the Ngee Ann Young Promising Artist 2023 Award and the 2018 and 2021 FRANZ Rising Star Award and Scholarship, which accorded her the opportunity to participate in the 2019 4th Révélations International Fine Craft and Creation Biennial in Paris and the 2019 FRANZ Park Artist-in-Residence Programme in Jingdezhen, the “porcelain capital” of China. She has also completed art residencies at AK Ceramic Center in Korea, Jingdezhen Ceramics University in China, KLAY About Good Life Studio in Macau, and HO-CA Clay Arts Studio in Japan. Daisy was one of the three finalists of the 2019/2020 Young Talent Programme at the Affordable Art Fair Singapore and has exhibited in Taiwan, China, Korea, and Singapore.
Daisy’s works reflect her patience, practice, and artistry in adapting slip-casting, typically seen as a mass manufacturing process in ceramics, to create unique pieces that underscore the enduring relevance of traditional techniques and processes and impeccable craftsmanship. The artist’s fascination with coloured slip, commonly used as a decorative feature in slip-casting, and with the manifold layers of craftsmanship hidden within the intricate, time-consuming process of slip-casting, has come to predominate her studio practice. Topographical lines demarcate each layer of exposed slip in her works, with the finished organic forms leading the viewer from one subtle element of interest — such as the gradations of colour — to another, like how a dip in the form might correspond to a change in the flow of slip and colour.
